This Is
How I Build Web Sites Period.
I Have
Left Nothing Out...
"Web
Site Building-101"
Let's Get To Work!
Introduction
and Thanks...
You
are on
your way to building your very first web site, so grab a cold drink or
hot cup of coffee and let's get to work. Oh yea, by the way, thank you very much for
purchasing this course. I truly hope that it helps you to
reach your goals.
The very first thing you need to do is to Click
Here,
and download the FREE NVU web site editor. Be sure to not click on the
big green "DOWNLOAD" button, but to first select your appropriate
operating system. (Windows, Mac, etc...) For most cases, let's select
the very first one by clicking on the "Download" text for, "Microsoft
Windows Full Installer." Select Run, when the window pops up.
Next
accept the NVU terms and conditions. Be sure to select check the box
to add the NVU icon to your desktop so
you can easily open this program up when you need it. Click finish,
close all boxes that come up, and close the untitled NVU page, so no
windows are open other than this course page, reduced down.
You should now see a purple icon on your desktop
for the NVU program.
Next, Click
Here to download a FREE copy of the "FileZilla" file uploader
program. You can select "All Platforms," or "Windows Only." As long as
you are not using Mac, let's select "Windows Only." Click on the first
line of text under Windows (FileZilla_Server-0_9_31.exe) You may have
to accept a pop up window as the download is on a secure server. Accept
that action, and the download will now begin.
O.K. so that wasn't too tough was it? Believe it
or not, you now own the two major tools needed to build an unlimited
number of web sites right from your home computer or wherever you are
in this world.
I told you this was going to be a step 1, step 2
kind of a process, and I want to keep my word. Now that we have the
tools we need to build, let's get right to the very next step and we
can really get started!
Please Click Here to
search for a cool domain name (no dorky ones allowed) A domain is the
address your website will have. Like this site is
www.webuilding-101.com, your new site will also need a name or a
"domain name," as they are called.
Now I have to
assume that since you purchased this course, you must have an idea or need for
a web site in mind right? Whatever that idea is, what would be a cool
name to give to it? To me, this is how I start any business idea out
that I have. I go to the link above, and begin to search for an
available .com domain name to register that has some good relevance to
my business idea.
So go and find one now! It does not have to be a .com if
you don't want, just get what fits your new site idea, and register it.
It won't cost you more than $10 bucks for an entire year, and the
domain will auto-renew every year unless you reply to one of their
email correspondences and select otherwise.
Wait about 20 minutes after registering the domain, and
then call their support number here 480-624-2500 to add basic, economy
hosting. Over the phone is the best way to do this, but you must wait
at least 20 minutes so you don't screw things up with the IP address.
You don't need to understand exactly why, just wait. Even I'm not
exactly sure why, and that's just fine.
When you do call, be sure to get them to walk you
through setting up the hosting account. Just say, "can you please walk
me through the setup?.." You will also want them to walk you through
creating what's
called your ftp login, username and password. Be sure to save this
username and password somewhere real safe, we will need it a lot!
Once your domain is purchased, and your hosting account
has been setup, as well as your ftp username and password created we
will want to start the setup process with our NVU web site editor we
downloaded earlier. Please reduce this page down by clicking on the
first tiny little square on the top right of the page, 2nd from the red
X. To bring it back up, just click on the rectangle that probably says
"Web Site Building Cha..." at the bottom of you screen. Got it? O.K.,
read the next paragraph on how to open your NVU web editor, and then
load in your ftp username and password.
Loading the NVU web site editor with your ftp username and password...
Click on the purple NVU icon located on your desktop.
When the program opens you should have a blank white screen with the
"NVU Site Manager open on the left hand side. If you do not see the Site
Manger on the left, where there is a button that says "Edit Sites,"
then you will need to open it. Click on "View" in your top tool bar 3rd
from the left. Mouse over "Show/Hide," and then select "Site Manager"
at the bottom of the next menu.
Grab your ftp login from its safe place. Click on "Edit
Sites," and then select "New Site." If the "New Site" button is not
there, then don't worry about it. Let's go ahead and give your new
website, and now blank white canvas a name for you, and only you to
recognize it buy.
Click to put your cursor in the empty box titled "Site
Name." Name it whatever you like. You are the only one that will ever
see this. It's no big deal when you only have one web site to login to
through this editor, but when you have multiple sites, or customer
sites, that you need to organize, you will want this list to be as
clean as possible.
Unless a site is a customer's, or a friend's site, I generally just name
it what the domain name is. ie: WebBuilding-101. Next line down is
wanting "Web Site Information," and "http address" of the site you will
be logging into. Be sure to type in the entire address from http:// all
the way through to .com (http://www.webbuilding-101.com) The next line
is "Publishing Server." In this spot you want to follow this example:
For my site, I put in this line, ftp://websitebuilding-101.com You
would obviously enter in your web site address after the ftp:// You can
also use the IP address of your hosting account, which you can get from
the hosting company. Either way will work fine.
Finally, enter in your username and password (very case sensitive!!!)
Be sure to check the box to "Save Password," so you should never need
to do this step again to access your website for editing. Click O.K.,
and your done.
Let's move on to the next chapter from here.
